I. Artist Statement. |
Paragraph I: History and Influences
- I have had one major breakthrough in my art career. That breakthrough was making art with my mom and recognizing how creating something made me feel. As a former architect and school counselor/therapist who uses art therapy to help kids express their thoughts, feelings and emotions, she showed me how to draw as a way to express mine. Art can be expressed in many forms, and cooking, designing footwear and software design are some of my favorite creative outlets. Cooking is both art and science, and I have created some delectable dishes and absolute disastrous eats along the way. It hasn't all been tasty, but cooking has shown me how art can be both divine and distasteful and that I can always start over. I can try again when things don't go as expected. I have designed several pairs of basketball shoes and have a few pairs of custom Vans. Wearing art on my feet allows me to express myself without saying a word, and as a gamer, I am always creating new worlds in Minecraft and sports cars in Grand Turismo. Being able to take an everyday object and turn it into something unique is one of the reasons I enjoy art so much.
Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City was one my inspirations to taking art this semester. I spent the entire day at the museum and still felt there was so much to see. I was in awe the exhibits and the realization that art takes on so many different forms. It was eye-opening to observe the art and artists from around the world and to see how those influences have shaped some of the designs we see today.
Paragraph II: Description of Who You Are as an Artist
My style is simple with a dash of pizazz. It reflects who I am as a person. I am not complicated, but I have flare and a taste for the dramatic. I have the same birthday as Liberace if that tells you anything. This juxtaposition is what I want my art to reflect. I want it to show who I am and what I like. I want people to see the clean lines of what I produce, but with colors or textures that create depth and tells them there is more than meets the eye. My hope is that people to feel calm, inspired or uplifted when they see my art. Sometimes, art is confusing or has too much stuff in it. That kind of art can make people feel overstimulated, stressed, and confused. I do not want people to feel like that when they see my art or when they see me.
Paragraph III: Making Connections
My life would not be as full without art. My imagination would not as stimulated and life would be harder without an outlet with which I could create. Art has many similarities to life. Just as art is layered, so too is our existence. We have layers and layers of experiences that shape who we are and how we show up in the world. We can inspire, delight, upset, and confuse others. So too can art. Just as a canvas can be reused by becoming blank again or a sculpture can be melted to be recast into something new, so can people. We can always start over, taking on new ways of being and be choosing to follow a different path. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and no piece of art, just like with people, is beautiful to everyone or is wholly accepted. If only we could remember this when we feel rejection. Art, and the mediums we use to enhance it, can illustrate the power of life decisions. A small change in art, such as shading a using a different color can completely change the work. This is true in life. A minor decision can be life changing.

The importance of reflection
1. Observe
2. My work of art is made up of 1 pumpkin and 2 apples. It was made using graphite
pencils. The apples are lying besides the pumpkin. The artist used shading to make their
work of art very realistic. You can tell that the light is coming from the left side of the
objects. The artist used hatching and cross hatching to shade. The artist also used an
eraser to create a type of light reflection.
3. The shading is helping bring everything together. It uses proportion and value to create a
realistic piece of art. This connection is seen on the right of the apples and also in the
overall work of art. This connection is an integral part because without it, the work of art
would be less realistic and not as eye-catching.
4. The mood of the work of art is cheerful. It is meant to represent thanksgiving and fall. It is
also meant to represent family and being together. The pumpkin is the biggest reason
why it makes me feel this way.
5. I think the apples are the best and most successful part of this drawing. It is the most
realistic part of my piece. The part that needs the most improvement is the pumpkin. It
kind of looks like a pumpkin, but I do not think that I got the shading correct on the
pumpkin.

Reflection of self-directed project #1
- Observe
- I see 4 pictures of the artist. They are very abstract and filled with colors. The artist is depicted in many ways, most with a large head.
- In this work of art, contrast creates emphasis. There is tons of contrast, and that is what makes this piece of art special.
- I think the mood of this piece is different. The artist wants you to be different than others, just like how his art is.
- I think this work of art is successful because it used colors well.

The 5-step critique process is a very helpful tool when reviewing your art. I have used it to make my art piece better than I thought I could make it. It can be used to critique others art as well.
Visual Arts Standard #3: Connecting - I can understand the relationship among the arts, history and world culture. I can make connections among the arts and to other disciplines, to goal-setting, and to interpersonal interaction.

I have connected my identity to my art that I created this semester. As said in my artist statement, I am simple with a dash of pizzazz. I try to incorporate that into my art every time I create it.
Visual Arts Standard #4: Producing and Presenting - I can create an original body of work and and then select my best work to present it in a portfolio and an exhibition.

I have taken ownership of my art. I do everything I can to make it as good as possible. I use the 5-step process to make it the best I can. Every mistake I make, I try to fix. That is the critique I use to make my art good. I make sure I like it and it is very high quality.
III. Reflection of the Portfolio
This portfolio shows my growth as an artist. In my earlier art, it can be hard to look at my art. It did not have unity. The contrast, emphasis and shading was non-existent. In my later works of art, especially my self-directed project #2, there is shading and unity. Most everything works well together. That is why this portfolio shows my growth as an artist.
